TMS supports Lyon–Turin base tunnel project (TELT)

TMS is contributing to one of Europe’s most significant rail infrastructure projects: the Lyon–Turin link. A fleet of 30 Multi-Service Vehicles supports tunnel logistics for the construction of the cross-border base tunnel between France and Italy.

A key element of the trans-european transport network

The Lyon–Turin rail link is a major cross-border project developed by TELT (Tunnel Euralpin Lyon Turin), connecting Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in France with Susa/Bussoleno in Italy. The cross-border section extends over approximately 65 km and forms a central part of the future trans-European transport network.

At the core of the project lies a 57 km twin-tube base tunnel, designed to improve capacity, reliability and safety for both freight and passenger transport. By enabling more efficient rail connections across the Alps, the project will contribute to reducing road traffic and supporting more sustainable mobility in Europe.

High-capacity MSVs for production logistics

To support tunnel construction, TMS is supplying a total of 30 Multi-Service Vehicles (MSVs). A key element of this fleet are the production vehicles, designed to transport segment rings, concrete and pea gravel under demanding tunnel conditions.

With a transport capacity of up to 150 tons and the ability to operate on gradients of up to 12% under load, these MSVs are engineered for high-performance logistics in large-scale tunnel environments. Their design enables efficient material transport while maintaining stability and control, even under heavy load and in complex alignment conditions.

Safe and controlled operation under challenging conditions

Given the high loads and steep gradients involved, braking performance and vehicle control are critical for safe operation. The MSVs are therefore equipped with a combination of complementary braking systems.

Hydrostatic braking in a closed-loop circuit allows controlled deceleration and stopping over short distances by supplying multiple hydraulic motors. In addition, a hydraulic retarder system increases braking capacity, particularly in descending sections, without relying on dynamic braking.

These systems ensure reliable speed control, safe handling and operational stability throughout the transport process, even under demanding underground conditions.

TMS is proud to contribute to this major European infrastructure project and to support efficient and reliable tunnel logistics on the Lyon–Turin link.
